Packaging Tips

In case, you are packing your goods yourself, here are some handy tips to make your packaging a hassle-free and smooth affair.
  • Ensure that the following supplies are available for packing:
    • Boxes, marking pen, bubble wrap, newspaper and tissue.
    • Tape and scissors.
    • Tape measure.
    • Strong boxes or containers that can be secured tightly and closed. Purchase boxes from moving companies for dishes, clothes and other fragile or special items.
  • Always use proper packing cartons and wrapping materials. Use professional packing tape, which is a wide, strong, clear or brown tape. Masking tape is not strong enough to support the weight of a fully packed carton. Tape all cartons closed on the top and bottom -- don't just fold the end flaps closed. Use crumpled, unprinted newspaper to pack items in boxes.
  • Pack Audio-video equipment in their original boxes. Label cables and tighten transit screws to the boxes. Where you are removing screws, then tape them to the objects they are removed from.
  • Always avoid loading more than 40 pounds into one box.
  • Label each box and indicate the following:
    • Which room it should be placed in your new place.
    • Your name.
  • When packing fragile items, clearly mark "FRAGILE" on the outside of the box, with arrows on either sides to indicate the correct upright position.
  • Clearly demarcate boxes holding essential items, such as cooking utensils, bedding, linens and toiletries. Each such box should be highlighted ‘OPEN FIRST’ as they need to be opened first and loaded last onto the moving van.
  • Cushion contents with packing material such as bubble wrap, newspaper or tissue. Save room by using towels and blankets to wrap fragile items.
  • Pack books tightly on end in small boxes. Sprinkle talcum powder between the pages and wrap the book before packing. Leave the powder for a couple of months to eliminate the smell.
  • Ensure that rugs and draperies are cleaned before moving. Leave them in wrappings for the move.
  • Pack medicines in a plastic bag or container.
  • Avoid packing valuables and ensure that they stay with you.
  • Check with your local Department of Agriculture for regulations regarding moving plants from one state to another. There may be restrictions on movement of certain plants to prevent importing bugs or pests that can destroy valuable cash crops.
